Sanctuary UT Meet-Up to Fight SB4 and Racism on Campus
- This event has passed.
Description
LOCATION: UT Campus, Mezes (MEZ) Room 2.124
Sanctuary UT invites members of organizations and individual activists from the UT community, including students, faculty, and staff, to join us for a meeting to discuss how we can use this network to support efforts to challenge anti-immigrant racist laws like SB4, and other attacks on our community on campus.
We will discuss planning actions at UT among UT students, faculty, and staff supporting calls by Latinx students and workers and others, supported by Sanctuary UT and over 30 other organizations for a Statewide Strike and Youth Rally Against Hate to protest SB4 on Friday, September 1, the day the law goes into effect. That day, high school and college students will gather at the Texas State Capitol to raise their voices with communities across Texas to say Basta SB4! Basta Texas!
In light of the recent white supremacist attack on anti-racist and anti-fascist counter-protesters in Charlottesville, VA, and a planned “Texas Freedom Rally” hosted by the “Texas Confederate Militia” on September 2nd, it is clear we should also use this meeting as a chance to not only mobilize against SB4, but stop other attacks from the white supremacist and fascist groups on immigrants, youth, workers, refugees, women, LGBTQI folks and people of color.
Campus groups previously involved with Sanctuary UT Include: Amnesty International, UT Chapter; International Socialist Organization-Austin Branch; University Leadership Initiative; United Students Against Sweatshops, as well as various other groups through support from individual activists
Other groups supporting this meeting so far:
African and African Diaspora Studies Graduate Student Organization; Autonomous Student Network; BastaTX; Cosecha TX; Feminist Latinx Organization Empowering Society; Jolt Texas UT; Texas Rising at UT
If your organization would also like to endorse the BastaTX campaign, please find more information and do so here: https://bastatexas.org/endorsing-organizations/faqs/
Again, this mtg will be held on UT Campus in Mezes (MEZ) Room 2.124 and is open to all students, faculty, and staff at UT interested in fighting SB4. Directions to building can be found here: https://liberalarts.utexas.edu/laits/maps-and-directions.php
The building is in the “six-pack” on the east side of the south mall. See you all there at 6pm!
