BASTA TEXAS TOOLKIT

It’s time to build the consensus against hate and fear. #BastaTexas #StopSB4

Let’s do this!

The resources below are a guide to help get you started. Make sure you sign up online and let us know your interested in building the resistance against hate.  Sign up to join the movement against SB4.

Below you will find useful summaries of SB4 provided by legal and media organizations, and helpful guidance about how and where you can take action today!

The resistance to hate legislation begins from the bottom up, and in our communities. Let’s do this.

  1. What can we learn from Arizona? Check out a background video with Dr. Cornel West talking about what hate legislation meant in Arizona!
  2. Know Your Rights Under SB4 (ACLU)
  3. 5 Things to Know About SB4 (Houston Tribune)
  4. Summary of Legal Arguments Against SB4 (MALDEF)

We will not comply with hate.

  • Sign up and endorse the campaign! Add your name to become a BastaTexas volunteer to organize against the politics of hate and fear in your community. And make sure your community organization, church, or local group endorses the campaign.
  • Start organizing your community! The real resistance to SB4 will come from the bottom-up, in communities across Texas. That means, we need to build with new and existing grassroots groups to defy SB4.  Sign up to let us know that you want to build with your community and check out the material below on community organizing 101.Grassroots community defense committees (English/Spanish)

  • Let’s get the right message! We’re talking about a Freedom Summer to build a movement of non-compliance against the politics of hate and fear. Check out our partners’ press release for an example of the message we want to share with our communities.
  • What’s this about sanctuary cities?SB4 was framed as an anti-sanctuary bill, but forcing localities – police, sheriffs, campus and local officials – to comply with Trump’s rogue deportation force is more significant than you think. The history of ICE’s deportation dragnet (aka Secure Communities, aka S-COMM) is full of obfuscation, racial profiling, and abuses of due process.  Read some background on efforts to uncover the truth about S-COMM here, and a backgrounder on Sanctuary Cities here.
